Who Was John Doar?
Born in 1921 in New Richmond, Wisconsin, John Doar grew up in our charming Midwestern town, where he developed the values of fairness and determination, which would go on to define his life’s work. After graduating from Princeton University and UC Berkeley’s law school, he began practicing law in his home state. However, it was his role as Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice that brought him to the national stage. Despite his significant impact on the national level, Doar remained deeply connected to his roots in New Richmond.
Contributions as a Lawyer
John Doar’s career is defined by his remarkable work during the turbulent civil rights era. He played a pivotal role in protecting the rights of African Americans, enforcing the desegregation of schools, and ensuring voter registration in the South. Doar personally escorted James Meredith as he integrated the University of Mississippi and stood firm against mobs opposing civil rights efforts. He also led key prosecutions, such as those following the infamous 1964 murders of three civil rights workers in Mississippi. His courage and legal expertise made him a central figure in the Justice Department’s fight for equality and human rights, earning respect across the political spectrum.
