Sather Nature Center

The Nature Center in New Richmond is a fantastic spot for birding, as it features a range of habitats that attract a variety of bird species. Especially being a heavily wooded area, the center is great for spotting warblers, woodpeckers, and other forest-dwelling birds. It’s a particularly good location during migration season when you may see a wide array of species passing through St. Croix County, Wisconsin. Trails

New Richmond’s connected community trail system is another place for bird watchers to consider. Two trails, Doughboy Trail and the Doar Prairie Restoration provide scenic routes that are also perfect for spotting birds. The Doughboy trail follows along the Willow river, giving bird watchers a chance to see waterfowl, wading birds, and migratory species. The Doar Prairie Restoration trail system offers bird watchers access to multi-use trails through natural prairie grasses and flower patches. The paths, though short, are well-marked and provide ample opportunities for peaceful, immersive bird-watching.

Paperjack Greenway, Park, and Nature Way

The Paperjack Greenway, along with Paperjack Park and Nature Way, creates a network of green spaces perfect for birders. The greenery and waterways draw numerous birds, from small songbirds to larger waterfowl. Bird watchers can wander along the water’s edge to try their luck at glimpsing a range of wading birds, among other species. These areas are especially great for those who also enjoy the natural scenic views that accompany the bird-watching experience. Willow River

Birding can also be rewarding from a kayak or a canoe. New Richmond’s Willow River is a true “water trail” made accessible by the Willow River Water Trail Initiative in 2015. Now free of debris and other obstacles, and kept well maintained, the Willow River is a beginner friendly, easy paddle during all seasons except for the springtime. Bird watchers can take advantage of this friendly paddle and go on an immersive paddling and bird watching experience on the water. The peaceful rush of the water, mixed with various bird calls and fresh air, makes this bird watching opportunity all the more unique and rewarding. Whether you’re a seasoned birder or just starting out, New Richmond offers a variety of landscapes and ecosystems that promise rewarding bird-watching experiences.

St. Croix Wetland Management District

Two miles outside of New Richmond, bird watchers can find the St. Croix Wetland Management District. Home to habitats such as wetlands, prairie, and oak savanna, the area is a great natural outdoor space for wildlife viewing. Views of waterfowl species are especially prevalent in this district, as the area features the Oak Ridge Waterfowl Production Area ADA accessible viewing platform for viewing the wetlands. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even bring along the canoe or kayak to take your bird watching experience to the water for a more peaceful and immersive day. The St. Croix Wetland Management District is free to the public.
